The Newton family has been rooted in Oakland since 1943 and, as a unit, they have dedicated their lives to Civil Rights progression and activism. David is a proud representative of the legacy and spirit of the Black Panther Party of Self Defense. David has served on NCDC, Local 10 Executive Board, Local 10 Grievance Board and Local 10 Dispatcher. In his spare time, David enjoys sporting events, concerts, healthy living and spending time with family.
Gina Villeggiante is a third-generation longshorewoman. She became a registered member of ILWU Local 10 in 2019. She is most proud of being one of the founders of the Local 10 Young Workers Committee (“YWC”) in 2022 and becoming a Longshore Mechanic in 2021. Her involvement in BALMA goes back to her childhood; she has volunteered at every Bloody Thursday memorial event since she can remember. Gina will be serving as a Dispatcher and Executive Board member this year as well.
Gina is especially proud of her long family history of union membership and activism. Her paternal grandfather was an ILWU longshoreman, her maternal grandfather was a sheetrock taper and member of the San Francisco painter's union, her father is a former Teamster and current ILWU member, her mother is a former member of the CSEA, and her brother is a current member of the IAFF. Gina also was a member of the CTA for six years, during her former career as an elementary school teacher.
Gina has always had a passion for education and volunteering, especially in roles where she can help empower someone. She hopes to become a mentor herself, and to motivate more women to get involved in the union.
Some of Gina's hobbies include traveling, yoga, dance, art, ping pong, interior decoration, spending time with her cat, and being around good people.
